Deadly Joplin, Missouri Tornado, Worst in 60 Years

Joplin, Missouri, USA, tornado devastation May...

With the death toll currently standing at 129, the Joplin, Missouri, tornado is the worst tornado in 60 years. Damage around the town of approximately 400,000 people is massive, and includes the local hospital. Hospital officials believe the building will be declared “unsalvageable”; if this occurs, the current structure will be demolished and a completely new facility rebuilt on another site.

Meanwhile, rescue efforts continue, and searches are still being conducted for possible survivors. Rescue crews, which includes over 50 dogs trained to detect human scent, as well as their handlers, are covering some areas for a fourth time, with plans to make a fifth sweep if necessary.

This is a brief recap of what is currently happening in Joplin that is making national headlines. What isn’t being reported is what is going on behind the scenes. However, most of the people involved in the behind-the-scenes work actually want it kept this way.

The relief efforts, which include churches from areas in the South where tornado damage also occurred just a few weeks ago, loading up their vans and buses with surplus goods that were donated for local tornado victims, are already underway. For these people, it’s not a question of if they can help; instead, the attitude is that of “how can we not help these people? We truly know what they are going through.”

As relief efforts continue in all parts of the country where tornado damage has occurred, we should be encouraged to see the examples of goodness that has always been inherent in people.

Things to Keep in Mind When Donating Your Family Car

It’s not uncommon for everyone—especially people with families–to look at various ways to save money when tax time comes around. Charitable donations are one of the most common types of deductions made by families hoping to receive a refund from the IRS. While most people view charitable donations as donating clothing or books or food, it’s becoming increasingly popular to donate the family car.

Car donations for tax purposes are popular because it’s a relatively painless process. Once the car is donated, the organization can sell the car for parts, use the car to conduct business or even sell it. Any profit that is made from the donated car goes directly to the charity to be used as they see fit. A great example of an organization that accepts car donations and uses the profits for a good cause is the program known as Kars for Kids. This organization collects used cars and directs the profits toward helping children receive a proper education.

If a car donation sounds like it might be something you would be interested in doing, here are a couple of things you should keep in mind.

  • The donation must be made to an organization or charity that the IRS has verified. Only donations to IRS verified organizations are eligible for deductions, so this is an important point if you are looking to claim a credit on your taxes.
  • You must also know the value of the car that you are donating. Occasionally documentation is required to show the value of the car for tax deduction purposes. If there is no appraisal of the car included, a family is forced to take the lowest deduction possible and could be missing out.

It’s important to make sure you understand the process to insure that you have all the bases covered. Both you and the charity of your choice can benefit from your car donation.

There are hundreds of people who get their daily dose of news while reading newspapers in tube or while riding the bus. News channels have started broadcasting top 20 or top 25 news items for the day in 5-10 minutes for people who like to stay updated yet who do not have the time to read the entire newspaper.

Current affairs, international news, national news can work as great ice-breakers between strangers, however be careful not to discuss politics though. Political views may differ causing tension between individuals. The world of journalism and news is very challenging. It requires lot of efforts to uncover the latest stories. Reporters and the media crew are known to travel far and wide in search of something interesting that could hook the audience to the news channels thus increasing the TRP. Journalists also follow the suit, they need to be excellent in inter-personal communication skills. They should have good networking skills. The television news reporters emphasize on drama and hype to create the sensational news whereas the journalists rely heavily on excellent language and narrative skills to captivate the audience.

Screen presence is important for television news reporters as they need to present the news on an audio visual medium.  Many journalists are only known by their names, common man may not know their faces because they use the written medium to interact with the masses. However both these reporters need to have strong literary skills and persuasive skills to achieve their objectives. Reporters and journalists do not or rather cannot work by the clock. They need to be up and running the moment they hear about any event or incident. Many times they need to visit places where an epidemic has broken out or where a natural calamity has created havoc. They visit these places without fear so that the masses can get a first hand broadcast of the scenario without any delay.

Parental Responsibilities Include Teaching Your Children Financial Responsibility

As a parent, you already know that you have many responsibilities. These include teaching your child right from wrong-which includes morals and ethics, manners and etiquette, and respect for others. With all the effort you expend to teach these and others, it is easy to forget that they should also learn financial responsibility.

This is actually one of the most important ones, as financial responsibility can actually be linked in some ways to morals and ethics. Many times it is financial difficulties that lead people to engage in immoral or unethical behavior. Therefore, learning financial responsibility is important in order for your child to be a functioning member of society.

Teaching financial responsibility includes helping your children learn budgeting methods. This can start at a relatively young age, when children begin receiving allowances. As they grow, these methods can be expanded to include taking responsibility for any loans and making sure they have sufficient money budgeted to makepayments.

One good way to teach financial responsibility in the area of loans and credit is to call attention to commercials about a debt consolidation service, or relating stories of people you know who needed to take advantage of these services. You can explain to your children that it is sometimes necessary to use a debt consolidation service to “get a handle” on finances, and that’s what the company is there for.

In fact, it is often in the area of student and other loans where older children may first start experiencing financial difficulty. This can happen even if you have taught your child as well as you possibly could about financial responsibility.

If this occurs, you may want to help your child consider if a debt consolidation service could help him get his finances under control, thus allowing him to start over, this time taking to heart all the lessons you taught him about financial responsibility, and applying them so that this does not occur again.

Drug Addiction Is Rising; Funding Is Not

Reports recently have discovered an unfortunate truth: drug addiction is getting higher, accented by a huge increase in deaths due to drug overdose. It’s not a pleasant story to swallow, but it is nevertheless the truth; and treatment centers are feeling the heat as funding for their services is gradually diminishing as well. What does that say about the government? The hope is a reluctant necessity to divvy up the funds as equally as possible.

Whatever reason it would be, it doesn’t change the real issue that many Americans are suffering from a needless disease called drug addiction. It’s this drug addiction that causes drug abuse, effectively killing lives without using any viruses or bullets.

Even the executive director ofalcohol and drug services at Coshocton Behavioral Health, Beth Cormack, feels the tight squeeze on the budget when handling a caseload of 400. Not a good number to deal with when not getting the proper funds. Moreover, when money’s tight, requesting grants gets to be an agonizing process as well as there’s no guarantee that the funds would be both awarded and also awarded under a decent time frame. The sad truth is when dealing with drug abuse, time frames are petty things to worry about. ASAP is the clear mantra rather than time frame.

John Postlethwaite, program manager for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Agency in Ohio, said his program had lost out on $2.9 million due to budget cuts. To even think of the clients that lose out when they desperately need the medical and mental assistance to combat the addiction is both shocking and terrifying. It leaves many questions to be asked—especially this:

Where could we possibly obtain more funds?

That’s a tough question to answer. The only hope is to find a good treatment center, such as at TheCyn.com that will be able to help patients with many different types of addictions.
